Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the art of throat singing, Alash are deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture. At the same time, they are fans of western music. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage.

This concert WILL happen! We have gotten enough of a response in advance sales to get them to come back to Austin!

Follow Loop 1 (Mopac) South all the way to the end, where it comes to a ‘T’ with FM 1826.

Turn LEFT on 1826.

Go approximately 4.5 miles to Crystal Hills Drive (Goldenwood subdivision). Turn LEFT on Crystal Hills Drive.

Follow Crystal Hills straight for about 1 mile. (There will be “Concert” signs.) Turn LEFT on Royal Way. The Dome is directly ahead of you.

Coincidentally, his visit comes within a few days of the 25th anniversary of the inauguration of the Dome in October 1985. The Dome was inaugurated by Brahmachari Nadkishore, Dr. Neil Patterson, and Dr. Morris on their first ever visit to Radiance, shortly after its completion.

Ustad Ghulam Farid Nizami

Ustad Ghulam Farid Nizami will play in the Radiance Dome on Saturday, May 15th at 7:30pm with Shiv Naimpally on Tabla. As always, our concerts are open to the public.

Concert Artist and Teacher of Classical and Folk Music of India and Pakistan, Ustad Nizami is an Austin resident whose principal instruments are Sitar, Vocals, Tabla, and Harmonium.

Ustad (Professor) Ghulam Farid Nizami is of the Senia Gharana tradition and is a descendant of Mian Tan Sen, court musician of 16th century Moghal Emperor Akbar the Great. He apprenticed with his father, Ustad Ishaq Nizami beginning at the age of 4 years. After his fatherā€™s death, he continued his studies with his elder brother Ustad Mohammad Akhtar Nizami as well as other esteemed Pakistani music maestros in sitar, vocals, tabla and harmonium. He received instruction in the tradition of Sufism from Khawaja Mohammad Moeen Khan Nizami and Haji Faiz Ahmed.

Ustad Nizami created and hosted several educational television shows on Pakistan TV that featured the traditional music of North Pakistan, and has made innumerable radio and television appearances. He has worked extensively with the Folklore Museum at Lok Virsa in Islamabad and performed widely for the Pakistani National Council for the Arts for over 25 years. He has performed for all Pakistani heads of State as well as for a long list of foreign dignitaries, including 3 US presidents, Saudi King Abdullah, Jordani King Hussein, Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana.

In over 30 years of teaching at Pakistani educational and performing arts institutions, including 14 years at the Beacon House School, Nizami has helped to create a new generation of musicians. Among his students are the first professional female tabla and sitar players in Pakistan. In 2008 he came to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar and taught at The University of Texas in Austin from ā€˜08- ā€˜09.

Dr. K.S Vaishali Srinivas, Vocal

Dr. K.S Vaishali is an eminent Hindustani Classical Vocalist and an Associate Professor at the Department of English Studies, Bangalore University, India. A disciple of the legendary vocalist Pandita Kishori Amonkar and Harmonium maestro Pundit Sheshadri Gawai, music critics from leading dailies, Indian Express, The Hindu, and the Times of India have variously acknowledged her as a ā€œRising Starā€, a vocalist who left them overwhelmed by a rich and melodious voice, deep in fervor, negotiating bravura passages with commendable ease encompassing all 3 octaves even in difficult ā€œtaansā€. Dr. Vaishali has give numerous recitals all over India and abroad enthralling connoisseurs of Indian music in UK, USA, Canada, Singapore and the Middle East, Dr. Vaishali is on her 2nd concert tour of the US. Her most recent recitals have been in New York, New Jersey, Washington DC, San Francisco, Houston and Toronto.

Dr. Vaishali is highly esteemed in her scholarly presentations on facets of Indian Classical music in addition to demonstrating a vast repertoire of Khayals, Bhajans, Thumris, Ghazals and Golden Hits originating from Hindustani Classical ragas. She is a music critic for the Hindu, a national newspaper and has 3 vocal albums of classical music to her credit.

Shankar Bhattacharyya, Sarod

Shankar Bhattacharyya has been a disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan since 1974. He continues to learn from the late Ustad’s great music and believes that this musical system is the gateway to spritual growth and empowerment. Shankar has played in concerts in India, UK, Switzerland, France, Brazil and in the US. He is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Texas A & M University and also the Faculty Advisor to SPICMACAY, the Indian Classical Music Society

Amit Bhagwat, Tabla

Amit was born in a musical family in Mumbai. His mother Vandana Bhagwat is a well known Hindustani classical vocalist & is one of the senior students of Late Pt. Nivruttibuva Sarnaik of Jaipur Gharana.

Amit started learning the art of Tabla at age of six under the able guidance of Late Pt. Vishnu Aloni & Sri Shantanu Panshikar (one of the finest disciples of Pt. Suresh Talwalkar). Amit is currently under tutelage of tabla maestros Sri Umesh Moghe and Sri Gourisankar Karmaker.

A traditional musical environment being available at home and the guidance and blessings of his gurus have helped him to develop himself as a good tabla accompanist and solo player.

By profession Amit is a Software Engineer.
